So, Addie is set to start Kindergarten in the fall. On Wednesday we went to a Parent/Teacher orientation. The meeting took twice as long because they had to translate, into Spanish, to all of the "Non English Speaking parents and STUDENTS." They then went on to tell us that they put the "Non English SPEAKING" students in with the English speaking students and having them in the classroom does not slow down the learning of the other students. It sure slowed down the meeting we went to. They do activities like put up a red color crayon. Or in my mind activities that should be done in preschool.
The teacher I spoke with said that this year she had 17 out of 30 non English speaking kids in her class. They also try to evenly distribute the classes so a teacher is not stuck with all of the harder children. So, if I send Addie to this school the only thing she will gain is more socialization skills because she is already reading the majority if their school words for the year and probably some additional math skills?
Today I tried to switch her to a school where there was a 2 to 30 ratio of Non-English speaking students to English speaking students. I guess I missed the open enrollment by 9 days. So I am fighting that my child will be left behind if she goes to this school because they will not be doing any thing to advance her education. It's amazing that if she goes to one school that is 5 miles away it would be completely different than going to a school 5 miles away in a different direction.

Mary, I'm so sorry about Addie's school situation. That has got to be SO stressful. I dread having to worry about that kind of stuff. It's crazy what goes on in the school system now days. Good luck on everything.
